User Research

In order to fully understand the needs and goals of the users regarding smart home apps, I’ve conducted number of depth interviews. These are the main needs and issues that came up:

“One of the most important things for me is saving energy. With the smart home I can control anything even if I forgot to turn something off.”

Convenience is the key, I like how technology enables me to control my home while I’m still on the road or at the office”

“Living in an isolated area can be scary sometimes. Knowing at any time that my home is secured, would be my top priority as a smart home app user.”

User Personas

After conducting the interviews and surveys, I analyzed the data and created two personas that represent the main pain points of the users, Gal and Diana :

After analyzing the main issues and needs of the personas, I’ve started ideating the possible solutions. The main goal that became a guideline is to create a simple interface that will enable full control of all devices in one app without being a programming expert .

Wireframes

After sketching, I've refined my ideas into high fidelity wireframes :

Login to HOMIE with a personal and secure account, giving the feeling that the app is safe and so is your home. Fingerprint is a significant security measure.

Dashboard

Designing the dashboard was a challenge. It was important for me to stick to the guideline that accompanied me throughout the process, which is to create a simple and intuitive interface, that allows full control of all the home devices.

Room Devices

When you enter one of the rooms, you can see which devices are inside the room and what their status is. Therefore you can turn off all the devices .In addition, you can easily switch between rooms using the top menu.

At the device page you can control it and see what status is it. For example, you can change the degrees/type of ventilation/fan volume of the air-conditioner.

Routines

The Routines page allows the user customize different settings for devices that are not necessarily in the same room. For example, "Away mode" turns off all the lights and locks doors according to pre-set that was chose.
